A Short History of Christ Church Woodford
Christ Church, situated on the corner of Old Hall Lane and Chester Road, was built in 1841 as a chapel of ease to Prestbury. The chief subscribers were Edward Davies Davenport of Capesthorne Hall and James Andrew who lived at Dean Water House, now the Deanwater Hotel. The Revd Benjamin Mashiter, the church’s first minister, also ministered at St Chad’s, Hanforth although he and his family lived in the vicarage at Woodford, formerly a farmhouse.

In 1872 the church was consecrated and the following year Woodford became a parish in its own right. Prior to this, however, the Revd Peter Wild, following his appointment in 1868 set about restoring and beautifying the interior of the church with financial help from the Davenports of Capesthorne. Several stained glass windows were installed together with an organ in the newly constructed western choir gallery. Mr Wild designed the wealth of carvings and texts that adorn the chancel walls and window surrounds, and the forms were replaced by 18c box pews from some other church.
